Had we not been able to absorb the devaluation in our currency, we would have suffered an equivalent devaluation in output and wages... ...The devaluation is already having its effect. Hoteliers, retailers and restaurateurs in my constituency are beginning to pick up custom, not just from Continentals coming to spend their euros, but from Brits who have decided that their planned skiing holiday is no longer worthwhile, and that they'd be better off taking a break at home. Northern Ireland is inundated by Christmas shoppers from the Republic: a friend tells me that there isn't a single parking space to be had in Newry.
